Meanwhile, Ahsoka, Rex, and the Droids attempt to convince Jesse and the waiting squads of troopers that Ahsoka is no longer actually a Jedi and thus not subject to Order 66. Jesse’s blue helmet is at the forefront, while the others are a combination of plain stormtrooper helmets and Ahsoka’s branded troopers; the shot is also a bit of foreshadowing to an iconic scene in The Mandalorian featuring stormtrooper helmets impaled on similar spikes, though the vibe of Ahsoka’s scene is one of respect and honor while the Mandalorian shot is one of warning and rebellion. It’s a chance for Ahsoka to show off everything she’s learned as a Jedi Master as she deflects countless laser blasts; up to the task, Rex also demonstrates singular precision and accuracy with his own stun blaster. Ahsoka has always had a special bond with the clone troopers, and the last time we see her in this series she is mourning them, standing in front of graves she's presumably dug for each one. Ahsoka, instead of replying with one of her patented snarky retorts, reaches for his helmet and removes it, revealing Rex's face and the single tear rolling down it. He kneels and takes Ahsoka's lightsaber in his hands before bringing his eyes up towards the heavens, where Morai circles the crash site (for details on that cameo, head here). "They're willing to die and take you and me along with them," he argues. Season 7 was an opportunity for Filoni & Co. to finish and polish up previously unfinished-but-released episodes like “The Bad Batch” arc, catch up with Ahsoka Tano and re-establish her internal conflict after leaving the Jedi Order during the “Martez Sisters” arc, and tie things up with the long-anticipated “Siege of Mandalore” story. To paraphrase a wise, Jedi master: End, the Clone War has. And it’s good. Even two seasons ago, the character didn’t fit into the settings as seamlessly as they do here. Ahsoka and Rex struggle to escape the Republic cruiser during Order 66. And if you missed Ahsoka’s insane mid-air flight leading into the Siege of Mandalore, you get another chance to experience it here as she falls from the crashing cruiser and makes her way through the wreckage to the safety of Rex’s piloted Y-wing, all while falling to the moon’s surface far below.
Clearly there is more story for both Ahsoka and Darth Vader in the future. Again, I love that there’s absolutely no suggestion that Maul might actually switch sides here. The episode's central action sequence doubles down on this being a flaming finish for the series as a Venator class cruiser full of clone troopers – now basically Stormtroopers – hurtles towards the surface of a moon with a destroyed hyperdrive, smoldering and breaking apart as it descends. There's been a time jump: the moon on which Ahsoka and Rex crash landed is now covered in snow, Imperial droids and troopers scour the rubble, and Darth Vader strides forward. Ahsoka’s story in The Clone Wars comes to a close as she pays her last respects to the fallen troopers. Ahsoka has incredible spatial awareness.
